Birth of a Literary Artist

Eighty-three years ago, in present-day Romania, Shlomo and Sarah Wiesel celebrated the birth of their third child. The boy, their only son, was born into the village of Sighet, Transylvania on September thirtieth and named Eliezer. The family was devoutly Jewish and encouraged each other to pray and study daily. At the age of fifteen, Elie and the rest of his village were relocated to Auschwitz in Germany where the horror truly began.
